Robert Lewis with Kenneth Helfrect
I received the ETO ribbon with 6 bronze stars. I am not sure about the WWII ribbon. We received the Unit Citation and the Good Conduct ribbon.
I was a Staff Sergeant in 334 squadron; a crew chief from 11/42 to 9/45. I helped crew many planes but basically P-51 "Georgie".
Concern over the planes I worked on was my greatest concern.
To keep physically fit I conducted close order drill & calisthenics.
At the end of the war I purchased and set up ice cream making equipment for the base.
One time I was sent to London for treatment of an eye infection and had my eyes dilated. I left the doctor's office during a heavy air raid. I couldn't see too well and found a stairway going down. At the bottom I found a door which I went into. It turned out to be a ladies restroom. It certainly caused much confusion.
I was in several heavy air raids in London and was on a train that was strafed south of Bishop Stoffard.
I eventually bacame a teacher, principal, Director of Special Education and wound up as a psychologist.
